Glass has a special quality as it transmits, transforms and holds light through colour and texture. Old glass has a particular magic of its own.
I am inspired by layers in nature and age erosion on antique glass, crumbling stone and gnarled trees. I also enjoy contrasts in texture and tone which I incorporate in my designs, encouraging devitrification to emphasise a particular theme.
I use waste plate (window) glass for both environmental and aesthetic reasons and, although it can be temperamental and time consuming to use, I find this material inspirational and fascinating. Some of the glass I use has been left in overgrown gardens, gradually affected by the elements, other pieces have come from cruise ships travelling to exotic countries and yet more from old houses whose windows were like eyes to the past.
When no longer needed this glass usually ends up in skips and landfill sites but I prefer to see it being re-used, turned into something both useful and beautiful, with a continuing story of its own.
Whether creating a bowl, sculpture, wall art or award, hand crafting recycled materials ensures each item is as unique as its origins and as special as the person it is made for.
